2-day Training in Spain at IAIA20

https://conferences.iaia.org/2020/registration.php

The annual conference of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) is being held in beautiful Seville from May 26-29 this year. There is a very strong focus on land acquisition and resettlement in the conference sessions and Intersocial will run a 2-day pre-conference training course on ‘Negotiating Sustainable Land Acquisition and Resettlement Agreements’.

International standards on land acquisition and resettlement recommend ‘negotiated settlements’ with affected people (IFC, 2012), however, the number of conflicts with communities is increasing across all sectors. The forthcoming IFC Handbook (IFC, 2020) highlights the use of committees as an important engagement method and tool. However, there is limited guidance on how to establish and committees to negotiate agreements with affected people in compliance with national and international social and human rights standards. Many resettlement committees are largely tick-box exercises with don’t lead to lasting agreements and often heighten the risk of conflict.

Intersocial has co-designed/implemented negotiations processes on complex mining, wind, oil and gas, and hydropower projects to achieve lasting agreements with directly affected and neighbouring communities. This new course will train participants to adopt a holistic approach to negotiating land acquisition and resettlement agreements and is based on Intersocial’s Social Framework for Projects (Smyth & Vanclay, 2017).

Intersocial is leading the provision of training on land acquisition and resettlement internationally with 33 intermediate/advanced courses in 18 countries with over 1,000 participants in the past five years (average score of 8.9/10). The course will use a master-class approach where participants are challenged to develop solutions to complex resettlement negotiations based on real-life case studies. The case studies are based on Intersocial’s experience in 25+ countries and partnering with projects to develop innovative participatory negotiation approaches including recent projects in the wind, hydropower, mining, and oil and gas sectors.

The course will appeal to a wide range of participants including consultants, development bank staff, academics, civil society and government representatives. The training course content is based on Intersocial’s textbook, (https://www.routledge.com/Land-Access-and-Resettlement-A-Guide-to-Best-Practice/Reddy-Smyth-Steyn/p/book/9781783532131) and aligned with the forthcoming IFC Handbook on Land Acquisition & Resettlement (2020) which will be promoted at the conference by the IFC.
